Summer 2013

With Craig Mcmichael, Dr. Leigh Graves Wolf & Laura Terry

This class was the first part of a cohort I participated in that was a hybrid of online and in person. This course focused on exploring different ways technology could help students learn and the different possible avenues. One project included the networked learning project that challenged us to learn to do or make something only using online resources. This class taught me new ways to integrate technology in teaching, how to create an online presence and take a deeper examination of how different people learn.

This was the second class that was a part of the cohort I participated in. Hand in hand with CEP 810, CEP 811 pushed me to learn about new technologies that were being used in the field of education such as Wordle, Makey Makey and Picktochart. I also learned about UDL, Universal Design for Learning, which encouraged me to think of new ways to incorporate technology to create more engaging lessons.

This was the third component to the cohort. The course focused on James Paul Gee's The Anti-Education Era (2013) and how to solve wicked problems that are present in education today. In small groups we collectively worked to solve our wicked problem and presented our possible solutions.

Fall

2013

With Dr. Vicky Mousouli & Dr. Evelyn Oka

I took this class as an elective because I have experienced several challenging students while teaching. Good classroom management is key to having a successful year. CEP 832 used evidence-based interventions to address students who have more severe behavior problems in the classroom.  I found this class incredibly enlightening and use some of the practices I learned in my general education classroom because they work well with all students.

Spring

2014

With Dr. Patricia Edwards

This class was a required for me to teach in Michigan.  The class took a close look at literacy and how it should be taught, monitored and assessed. In TE 846 we shared ideas about the readings with our peers through discussion forums and small group work. I also completed a case study to help me reflect on my literacy practices in my classroom.

Summer

2015

With Dr. Paul Morsink & Spencer Greenhalgh

In CEP 813 I studied assessment learning theory, with a focus on formative assessment and understanding by design. I was also introduced to a wide variety of new assessment tools using technology, including Minecraft and Seesaw. I learned to use electronic portfolios to not only assess student learning, but also gather information on student learning.  By analyzing data from assessments and using the information to make effective instructional choices for students, I learned to create a more effective learning plan for their desired objectives.

Fall

2015

With Dr. Anne Heintz and Liz Boltz

Education is no stranger to technology and more educational opportunities are being offered online each year. Orchestrating a successful educational online experience requires a lot of design considerations. CEP 820 helped me learn to take components of my in person teaching and transfer it to an online class. Using what I learned I created my own online course modules that correlated with what I was teaching my students.

Spring

2016

With Dr. Punya Mishra and Carmen Richardson

This class focused on good and bad design while also exploring new technologies. I examined different designs and evaluated their effectiveness. From the way a curb is designed to help people to the way a classroom is designed to best fit the needs of each student. What I enjoyed most about the class was the focus on empathy and it’s role on design. When people learn to step into the shoes of the person they are designing for it opens their eyes, and hearts, to more options and considerations.

Summer

2016

With Dr. Steve Weiland

ED 800 explored the foundations of public education along with the policies and ideologies that support that education is the most empowering establishment today. ED 800 explored the history of educational policy and reform initiatives. It established that research must drive efforts to improve education across the country and examined the history of inquiry and how it provides a perspective that is needed to continue to move forward in education. It also stresses the importance of data-driven research for the reform of educational systems.

With Dr. Matt Koehler, Brittany Dillman, Spencer Greenhalgh and  Sarah Keenan

ED 870 was the cherry on top of the learning that I completed during the MAET program. This course focused on creating a digital portfolio to demonstrate what I have learned through my classes in the program. Students chose a platform to create their portfolio and customized it to best fit their personality. This class required me to reflect on what I have learned, and how it will impact my career in the future.
