SHOWCASE

When I began the Master's in Education program at Michigan State University I was excited to learn new ways to integrate technology into my teaching and use technology to enhance my teaching practices.  Through the program I have been able to accomplish both.

This showcase highlights some of the work I have completed in my program. The projects I chose demonstrate both of my goals and a few represent some of the new ideas I was introduced to, to help me not only grow as an educator, but also be able to contribute to my classroom and other classrooms as well.

Integrating Objectives with Technology

Online Practice Website
My goal was to create a place where students could continue to practice important skills we learn at school with proper instruction. For example, I have lost track of how many times I have had a parent tell me they had been practicing letters and letter sounds with their child and then I find out they were using the wrong sounds. My website ensures that objectives like this are covered and practiced correctly to help students grow in their foundational literacy skills.
Minecraft for Kindergarten
Using games is a great way to allow students to explore and fail in a safe environment removed from the judging eyes of teachers and peers. I created a Minecraft area that kindergarten students would build 3D shapes in for me to assess at a later time. This is a screencast explaining the objectives and hopes for the activity.

Problem of Practice : Kinesthetic Learning
My problem of practice is the lack of play and movement my kindergarten students are given during the academic day. After explaining and giving ample data on how important it is for young children to move, I found kinesthetic based activities that aligned with learning objectives to address the "problem".

CMS Assessment Creation
CMS (content management system) has a variety of possibilities to enhance how we teach students. However, as a kindergarten teacher, I found this particular idea challenging. I found Seesaw and was thrilled to find a tool that I could use in my classroom to help assess my students.

Using Technology to help Students with Special Learning Needs
Using technology to help ADHD students. Giving students the outlet to move allows them to release some of the hyperactivity that would materialize in other forms that would be distracting to themselves and others thus taking away from learning as a whole.

Wicked Problem: Failure as a learning tool
Through our research and my own experience, failing is a natural part of learning. However it is sometimes difficult to foster an environment that students are comfortable taking risks and failing. Wicked problems are difficult to solve. In this post my group illustrates and discusses the path to solving the wicked problem of using failure as a tool to learn.

Networked Learning Project
Today people can go online to learn how to do almost anything from an every day life activity of changing a tire to taking a college course. The Networked Learning Project challenged me to learn to do something I had wanted to learn but never made time for. While learning strictly online had some challenges I found success in my learning goal. These links chronicle my learning journey on my class blog.

Passion Quotient, Curiosity Quotient, Technology & Me
I was asked to create a representation the passion quotient, curiosity quotient, technology and ourselves. In my creation I hope to convey my passion and curiosity for teaching and my profession along with how I hope to use technologies to install passion and curiosity in my students.
